Debriefing and Member Care Training

Equipping those who have served to care well for global workers

Most global workers will never be debriefed well. Not because no one cares, but because there are very few people trained to do it.

Compass Asia facilitates training in debriefing and member care, working with experienced trainers, ministries and member care organisations from around the world to bring good training within reach of people serving in Asia and beyond.

The training is open to anyone who has served full time cross culturally and has a heart for the people still on the field. You do not need a counselling qualification and you do not need a member care job title.

Who this training is for

This training is for those who have served cross culturally themselves.

That is the one thing we ask, and it is not a formality.

The best debriefers have been missionaries.

Something settles in a person when the one listening already knows what that life asks. Nothing has to be explained or justified first. They can stop setting the scene and start telling the truth, and that is where debriefing actually begins.

If you have served on the field and you want to be equipped to care for those still there, the application is below.

Training we facilitate

Basic debriefing Where everyone begins. How to sit with someone while they tell the story of a season of life, and what to do with what comes up. Pacing, questions, silence, and knowing where debriefing ends and counselling begins.

Crisis debriefing Care after a critical incident, when something has overwhelmed the ordinary ways a person copes. What helps in the first days, what comes later, and how to recognise when someone needs more than you are able to give.

TCK debriefing Debriefing children and teenagers growing up between cultures. They carry their own losses from a life of moving, and they process them differently from adults.

Le Rucher debriefing training We facilitate Le Rucher's Exchange at the Cross debriefing training when a training can be arranged in Asia. Only a small number of trainers are equipped in this model, so dates are set as they become possible.

The debriefing approach

The debriefing training we facilitate follows the pattern of Jesus meeting the two disciples on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24. He walks with them. He asks what they are talking about. He lets them tell the whole story, including the part where they had hoped and were disappointed. Only then does He interpret it for them.

Our debriefing follows that shape. A person tells their story, all of it, at their own pace.

Given that space, people often see what they had not seen before. They find Jesus was there in the story all along, and their eyes are opened to it, as it was for the disciples on that road. That is the Holy Spirit's work and not ours. Our part is to walk alongside, and to stay with someone as they bring their story to the Lord.

Being debriefed comes first

Prerequisite: you need to have been debriefed yourself before you train to debrief others.

Being debriefed gives you the chance to process your own story first, and having walked that road you can walk alongside someone else on theirs.

We are all facilitators in this. The work belongs to God, and we make room for it.

If you have not been debriefed yet, say so on your application. Compass Asia offers debriefing in Penang, and we can point you to debriefers elsewhere.

How training comes together

Facilitating training is at the heart of what Compass Asia does. Sometimes that means recommending a training run by someone else. Sometimes it means bringing one within reach of people who would otherwise have no way to attend.

Most of that will begin with online training, and our hope is to build cohorts of people learning alongside others who understand the work, wherever in the world they are serving.

What we are able to offer grows with the interest we hear. Every application shows us where the need is and helps shape the next training we bring together.
