From Darkness to Light: Finding Healing in Truth

Updated: Mar 12

There is something about darkness that breeds fear, confusion, and pain. The enemy thrives in secrecy, whispering lies that keep us trapped in cycles of shame and grief. His agenda has never changed—to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). And one of his greatest weapons is to keep us in the dark, convincing us that our wounds, failures, and struggles must remain hidden.

But the Kingdom of God operates differently. Healing happens in the light.

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light—for the fruit of the light consists of all goodness, righteousness, and truth. Everything exposed by the light is made visible.” – Ephesians 5:8-9, 13

The Enemy’s Stronghold

Shame isolates. It convinces us that we are unworthy of love, that if people truly knew us, they would reject us. It keeps us silent, afraid, and stuck. For many Christian global workers, this is a daily battle. They pour out their lives for others, yet inside, they may be struggling with loneliness, burnout, or even past wounds that feel too heavy to share.

Shame whispers:

  • “You’re not strong enough for this work.”

  • “If you tell someone, they’ll think you’re a failure.”

  • “God must be disappointed in you.”

But these are lies. Lies that keep us bound. Lies that Satan—the father of lies (John 8:44)—uses to isolate and weaken those on the frontlines of ministry.

Grief in the Darkness vs. Grief in the Light

Grief, like shame, can feel too heavy to bring into the open. Many missionaries have lost things they never got to grieve—relationships, home cultures, childhoods, teams that fell apart, ministries that didn’t go as planned.

Unprocessed grief festers in the dark. It can turn into bitterness, exhaustion, or even a loss of faith.

But when we bring grief into the light—when we name our losses and let Jesus meet us in them—He heals.

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18)

Walking in the Light

The Bible is clear—we are not meant to walk in darkness.

"If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin." (1 John 1:6-7)

This means stepping out of isolation and into truth—naming the things we’ve kept hidden and allowing the Lord to purify and restore us.

Stepping Into the Light

So how do we step out of the enemy’s darkness and into God’s healing?

  1. Speak Truth Over the Lies – Identify the shame and lies you’ve believed, and replace them with the truth of God’s Word.

  2. Confess and Share Safely – Find a trusted friend, counselor, or mentor to share your struggles. The power of shame breaks when it is brought into the light.

  3. Let God’s Light Transform You – Spend time in the presence of Jesus, allowing His Word to shape how you see yourself.

  4. Seek Member Care – If you’re in missions, don’t walk alone. Get the support you need—debriefing, counseling, spiritual care—so that you can thrive, not just survive.

At Compass Asia, we are here to be a safe place for those serving on the field. We know that healing happens when things hidden in the dark are brought into the light. Our retreats, counseling, and debriefing are designed to help global workers process grief, confront shame, and step into freedom.

If you’ve been holding onto things in the dark, know this—Jesus is not afraid of your pain. He is ready to bring light, healing, and restoration.
