Our Story

Compass Asia was launched in 2024 to address the critical need for member care for Christian global workers across Asia and neighboring regions. Compass Asia is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the state of Florida and is also registered as a nonprofit in Malaysia.

After serving full-time for 25 years in North India and Malaysia, Rachel recognized the challenges global workers face without proper support. With her certifications in Biblical counseling through CCEF and as a Level 2 certified Christian trauma care provider, Rachel provides compassionate leadership by connecting global workers to the right care providers. She serves as the first point of contact for global workers, ensuring they feel supported and comfortable with the care offered by Compass Asia’s therapists and counselors. Driven by her own story and a season of personal healing and reflection, Rachel recognized the profound needs of global workers on the field who often lacked adequate care. Drawing from her own journey and deep understanding, she returned to Asia to establish Compass Asia, combining her experiences with her passion for holistic member care. She is dedicated to personally walking alongside global workers, ensuring they feel heard, valued, and fully supported in every step of their journey.

With a dedicated Board of Directors, a Advisory Team, care providers, and committed volunteers, Compass Asia provides a wide range of services tailored to the unique needs of cross-cultural ministry families. These services include coaching, mentoring, spiritual direction, retreats, and support programs. Compass Asia also offers specialized care through counseling, inner healing, biblical counseling, psychology-based approaches, and targeted therapy for marriages, families, trauma, or crisis situations.

The mission of Compass Asia is to ensure global workers and their families receive the care they need to thrive in their vital work without returning prematurely. By creating spaces for rest, reflection, and growth, Compass Asia empowers these workers to continue their calling with resilience and hope.

For nine years, we have carried the weight of the work without the chance to reflect or process. We stayed at the Compass Asia guest house for two weeks and experienced our very first debriefing—something we had dreamed of for years. The time of rest and intentional care at Compass Asia was an answer to our prayers. We have always dreamed of a debriefing like this but never got the opportunity until now to debreif all we have walked through as a family. We left feeling refreshed, reconnected to our calling and more united as a couple for our next chapter of ministry.

Dr. Lance Lee

Dr. Lance Lee is a Harvard-trained executive coach, counselor, psychotherapist, and ordained pastor with a dual doctorate in Counseling & Consulting Psychology from Harvard University. A former seminary professor and program director in counseling psychology and marriage & family therapy at Fuller and Western Seminaries, he has also served as Executive Director for One Challenge International in Hong Kong. As a global worker, Dr. Lee lives and serves in both Hong Kong and Singapore, continuing to provide leadership and support on the field to global workers.

With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Lee has mentored and developed professionals, established counseling centers, and created academic programs in North America and Asia. His work integrates transformational approaches to therapy, including narrative and emotionally focused frameworks, emphasizing the healing of relational trauma and the optimization of global workers' unique gifts.

Dr. Lee’s contributions to Compass Asia focus on therapeutically based member care, addressing the personal and professional development of global workers. His expertise in guiding individuals and couples toward emotional and psychological wholeness adds immense value to Compass Asia’s mission.

Debbi Topel

Debbi Topel earned her Master of Arts degree in Family Psychology from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. Since 1998, she has been a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She has pursued advanced training and certification in the treatment of complex trauma and dissociation since 2011. Debbi co-founded a mental health clinic in 2015 where she serves as the Director of Operations.

Based in Minnesota, she has worked for two years with the Sudanese population in the area and has also served in short-term missions to India. Debbie has enjoyed working clinically with people of diverse cultures and has a heart to support others in their healing and freedom, often inviting them to engage outside of their known and unknown boarders.

Debbi anticipates being approved as a MFT supervisor in early 2025. Her experience equips her to offer Compass Asia valuable expertise in areas such as operational strategy, cross-cultural engagement, and trauma-informed care.

Florence Tan

Florence Tan answered God’s call to full-time ministry in her mid-20s. Together with her late husband, David Tan, she embarked on a ministry journey spanning over four decades serving in countries like Singapore, Ethiopia, China, Bangladesh, and Vietnam.

Florence and David shared a vision for member care, focusing on recruiting, training, and supporting global workers in their critical roles. Based in California, she travels regularly to Asia to lead conferences, engage with churches, and support global workers.

Florence continues to keep her mission and share vision with David alive by offering Compass Asia invaluable insights and advice that draw from her deep understanding of the needs present in these regions.
